Default Establishments roll out gimmicks to pull in Valentine's Day crowds

SINGAPORE: It's the season for love, and gimmicks seem to be the order of the day as establishments make dollars and sense out of Valentine's Day.

For restaurant owner Wolfgang Lapper, Valentine's Day is special.

After all, he met his wives - both of them - on this day......but on separate occasions, of course.

That's why to bring a touch of romance to his restaurant for the day, he has roped in that famed romantic figure of Phantom of the Opera - the disfigured genius from the famous Broadway musical who falls for young singing star, Christine.

"It's because Phantom is a story of love and it suits perfectly, and Phantom of the Opera is coming to town," said Wolfgang Lapper, owner of Esmirade Group of Restaurants.

On the day itself, the masked and caped figure of romance will invite couples onto a boat for a leisure cruise.

Champagne and laughter are expected to flow, before a romantic French dinner.....although the surroundings of the subterranean depths of a Paris opera house will be replaced by scenes of the Singapore River.

While it's usually full house at many restaurants during the Valentine's Day period, competition amongst them is still very keen and so themed evenings are getting increasingly popular.

While Valentine's Day may be one of the busiest days in the calendar for restaurants, the rush tends to come at the last minute.

Wolfgang Lapper said: "I had many people say, 'please, help me' - last minute, you know."

For those who can't afford a cruise and dinner, Cathay Cineleisure has a more affordable outing.

Couples can chill out in a private chamber, with food, videos or an e-gaming session. - CNA/ir
