Education Ministry to absorb new strategies for teaching of English SINGAPORE : The Education Ministry is absorbing strategies at a language learning seminar to learn updated techniques of teaching English.
The three-day language learning seminar is being held in Singapore to help educationists in the region break away from the conventional mode of teaching the subject.
The seminar deals with English and examines language learning.
Being the main language taught in Singapore schools, English has been attached significant importance by the government because of its status as an international language.
Cedric Leong Kai Wah, Curriculum Planning Officer, Ministry of Education, said: "Many of the strategies that will be shared in this seminar will definitely have an impact on mainstream classrooms, as well as classes that are learning English at the foundation level or even higher level."
The Indonesian Education Minister is the current president of the organising body, the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organisation.
The organisation has hooked on to a shift in the way language is taught over last 10 years and is looking at ways to break out of the old methods of teaching and learning a language.
Professor Bambang Sudibyo, Indonesia's Minister of Education, said: "There are many schools that are experimenting on how to deliver language courses. By just doing the seminar, we will not find out for sure, if this is going to be the best way, but it will facilitate all the experiments we are doing in all the 10-member countries."
The theme of the seminar revolves around strategies in learning and teaching.
The techniques of learning a language have evolved over the years.
Teachers and officials are therefore listening and talking about the concept that learning a language stretches beyond the classroom.
Previously, teachers thought the answer lay in finding the right teaching method first, and then to teach it to large groups of people.
But now the idea is to treat students individually and recognising people learn in different ways.
More than 500 participants from the region, including teachers and linguists, are taking part in the three-day workshops and discussion groups. - CNA/ch Hiring Part Time Waitress : To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. |
