Doctors find dead baby in teen's bag
PERAK SCHOOL HORROR
March 10, 2007
HER face was deathly pale and she was bleeding profusely, but the 16-year-old Perak student would only say that she had stomach cramps.
The Secondary 4 student had asked to be excused from a PE lesson on Tuesday and was escorted to the school's sick bay at about 1.30pm, reported Harian Metro.
However, the excessive bleeding frightened her teachers and she was taken to the Seri Manjung hospital, which is next to the school.
There, it was found that the girl had just given birth.
MrZainuddin Yaacob, the assistant commissioner to the head of police in Manjung district, said the teenager insisted she had not given birth.
'At first, she refused to admit that she had just given birth, but after being questioned repeatedly, she admitted it,' he said.
'She said she put the baby in a bag that she had taken to the hospital.'
MrZainuddin added that the teacher who took her to hospital had no idea that the bag she was carrying had a baby inside.
By the time doctors opened the bag and found a baby girl, she was already dead.
Utusan Malaysia reported that the teen had delivered the baby in the few minutes that she was left alone in the sick bay.
However, Sin Chew Daily reported that she had delivered the child earlier in one of the school toilets.
It said that the girl then hid the baby in her bag and continued school, pretending that nothing was wrong.
The report also said that the baby was found alive, but later died in hospital.
The police declined to reveal more facts on the case as the girl is believed to have been raped by a family member.
Sin Chew Daily reported that she had been allegedly raped by her stepfather.
It appears that the teen did not confide in any of her friends about the birth or of being pregnant.
She is a new student who had started at the school only two months ago.
Originally from Kuala Kangsar, she had apparently been transferred to the new school in Sitiawan because her grades were very good.
The director of the Education Ministry for Higher Education Science and Technology, Datuk Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, said that this case was a serious matter.
He added that he had instructed the police to look into it.
The school management has yet to submit a report on the case to the ministry.
Said Dr Zambry: 'The student will be given our full support and an investigation will be carried out to determine if a crime has been committed.'
The student is said to have recovered well.
At first, she refused to admit that she had just given birth, but after being questioned repeatedly, she admitted it.
