SINGAPORE: A group of local artists is drawing on their skills to launch a book and an exhibition in August.
Called "Reflections of the Stroke", the art exhibit hopes to take guests on an introspective journey at the Ode To Art Gallery in Raffles City Shopping Centre.
Works from four distinguished local artists will be featured, alongside that of other promising new talents.
Jane Low, General Manager of Ode To Art Gallery, said: "There's a huge talent pool available in Singapore that's unrecognised, so we want to bring them together in this exhibition. There's a great diversity that the local art scene offers, especially when artists of different backgrounds come together."
The exhibited works will also shed light on the perspectives of different cultural groups and generations.
China-born Chua Ek Kay arrived in Singapore when he was 6 years old.
He said: "I think I'm lucky to live in Singapore because besides the culture inherited from the family, I also explore the Western side of my influence. As a Singaporean, we're able to see the globalised features in this context."
Unlike his older counterpart, Singapore-born Max Kong explores another aspect of this island.
He said: "As a Singaporean, I think we are conditioned to be efficient, so the notion of speed plays a part in my work. I execute my painting at a faster speed than (those who use) conventional painting methodology."
His medium of choice – cement – also brings to mind the idea of Singapore as a concrete jungle.
Despite the headway made by local artists in recent years, demand for local artworks is hardly as strong as that for foreign ones.
It is hoped that the exhibition, along with Ode To Art's new gallery in Kuala Lumpur, will get things going for them.
