Default Crossing road to save time turns fatal

WOMAN KILLED IN KATONG ACCIDENT

The couple usually take a taxi from the road in front of their house.

But on Tuesday afternoon, they decided to cross the road to save time as the taxi would not need to make a U-turn.

That decision proved fatal.

Madam Hoh Ah Moi, 68, died after being hit by a car while they were crossing the road.

The car was driven by a 22-year-old woman who was rushing for an examination.

Madam Hoh and her husband, MrLim Lee Thong, 76, had left their Carpmael Road home and were crossing Dunman Road, near Katong, when the accident happened.

According to Lianhe Wanbao, the couple were going to Singapore General Hospital for a medical appointment.

Both the examination and the medical appointment were scheduled for 2pm.

The impact of the crash caused Madam Hoh and her husband to hit the windscreen and fall on to the road.

Madam Hoh and her husband were taken to Changi General Hospital (CGH). Mr Lee escaped with minor injuries but Madam Hoh died in hospital at 8pm.

The driver was reported to be helping police with investigations.

Mr Lim Pong Huang, the couple's second son, said his elder brother usually took their father for his medical appointments.

'My father had had a corneal transplant in his right eye. But his eyesight continued to deteriorate and he lost sight in his right eye.

'Then he began having problems with his left eye and had a corneal transplant a month ago. This time, his eyesight began to improve and then my mother decided to take him on Tuesday instead,' he said.

'They decided to take a taxi from the opposite side as it would mean a faster trip since the taxi would not need to make a U-turn,' he said.

Mr Lim said his uncle, who was passing by, called him when he saw the accident.

When he rushed there, Mr Lim said he was told that his father had only bruises and cuts on his face.

He said: 'I was told that my mother had cuts and scratches too, but I later learnt that she had internal bleeding.'

His cousin, entrepreneur Kassandra Lim, 39, said: 'The doctors told us that they did an emergency operation because of the internal bleeding.

'As soon as her blood pressure stabilised, the doctors said that they wanted to do another operation to stop the bleeding that night. But her condition deteriorated after the surgery and she did not make it.'

Ms Lim said that her uncle was recovering well and was scheduled to be discharged today after a medical review.

She said: 'He is depressed after hearing of his wife's death.'

Madam Hoh will be buried on Sunday, she said.

SOLD DRINKS

Mr Lim said his parents started out as hawkers selling iced drinks at the old Joo Chiat Market.

He said: 'When the market was demolished, they moved to Geylang Serai, where they operated a store selling sundry goods for over 30 years. They were frugal people and with their earnings, they raised me and my three brothers and sister.

'Two years ago, the store was also demolished and they decided to stop working.'

He added: 'I don't know if the accident could have been avoided if my parents had stuck to the same side of the road. It was just a matter of choice.'

Well, as drivers, we are always reminded time and again to look out for pedestrians. Feel sad for the couple and also for the driver...... Hope none of us have to ever confront with this type of situation.

I still think driver should be more cautious of the road condition, like any pedestrians crossing etc.

she is assisting the police with questioning.

I think it's just fate and most likely both parties are at fault.
