Default Concert ruined by chatting woman and kids

11 November 2006
Straits Times
(c) 2006 Singapore Press Holdings Limited

This is a complain letter written by someone..

Quote:
ON WEDNESDAY evening, I attended a concert featuring three excellent pianists in the rarely heard Mozart Triple Concerto, K.242.

What I had hoped to be an evening of grace and charm eventually descended into a most disappointing experience. Seated right behind me in the auditorium, three children and a woman started chatting as the concert began, and it soon became apparent they were more engrossed in their verbal exchange than the music.

Despite several requests from my partner and me, the conversation among the party of four persisted, accompanied intermittently by much fidgeting. After a certain point during the concert, we stopped any more attempts to ask for peace as we did not want to affect the people around us any further.

During the intermission, I told the woman that children who have not developed an appreciation of classical music and an awareness of concert etiquette should not be made to attend such events. Instead of offering an apology, she accused me of overreacting, all the while reminding me she had three children under her charge.

While I am not writing this letter to seek redress in any way, I am still appalled by the moral high ground the woman imagined she had just because three children were under her charge for the evening. The sad truth is that the noise they made during the concert affected the audience seated around them and the performers on stage.

Through this letter, I make a plea to all eager parents not to shove their young children into the concert hall to attend concerts before they are ready. Forcing children to sit through a concert in which they have zero interest is not only a mild form of cruelty, but also torture for other members of the audience.

Some children may even develop a sense of resentment toward all things associated with classical music. Worse still, the hard work of the performers could be wasted and that is sad scenario for any professional musician.

Instead, there are alternatives if one desires to cultivate a love of classical music in young children. Attending an open-air concert by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and spinning a CD in the comfort of one's home are two that spring to mind.

i think not only does it happen in concert.. in cinemas we also will tend to have this kind of situation..
lets share your views on this kind of behaviour..
i personally hates it.. damn.. wanna watch a nice show quietly also cannot.. hah..

true. imagine you're spending like hundreds of dollars for the better seats for the concert and the noise is what you get when you know that the concert is worth all your money without those chit chatting...

I hope this is not OT...but it's about people chatting when silence is expected le.

On Monday, I booked an appt for a facial in Bioskin at The Adelphi. The facial was 2 hours' long. For the two torturous hours I had to endure non-stop chatting from an auntie in the next room! The walls were just plywood so every single word she yak yak yak could be heard clearly. She didn't even bother to lower her voice. The therapist attending to her made it worst by responding to all her talk....

I was so tensed by the disturbances and even though I could hear faintly some relaxing music in the background, i could not relax lah! How to ah?

I complained to the receptionist about it and all she did was said sorry...

I really can't stand people who really has no cow sense! There is a place and a time to chit chat but some people just cannot control their verbal diarrhoea, I guess. Grrrrrrrrrrr

The cinema management should enforce usherers to THROW these irritating people out with the audiences complaints. So inconsiderate & rude! If I meet such ppl, i may shoo them out.

If she can't control her kids then don't bring them there. It's the responsibility of the parent to discipline their kids. I would have reported it to the management on the spot. It's just plain inconsideration on their side and they should have known better that talking during a concert is even worse than talking in a cinema.
