BABYLON, N.Y. - A sting targeting alcohol sales to underage customers produced a startling result, police said: Not a single arrest.
A 19-year-old operative who tried to buy beer without identification was turned down at every one of some 18 Babylon Town-area gas stations, food marts, delis and grocery stores he visited Tuesday, Suffolk County Police Sgt. Robert Jones said.
In the past, about 20 percent of vendors have failed such tests, he said Wednesday.
"I think they're finally getting the message," Jones said. Some may have learned from mistakes: Some businesses visited in the recent sting had histories of liquor law violations, the sergeant said.
Selling alcohol to a minor can lead to a misdemeanor charge of unlawful dealing with a child.
