A CLEANING company was convicted of failing to provide acceptable accommodation for its foreign workers.
Maint-Kleen was fined $7,500 on Tuesday for housing its workers in a public toilet in Waterloo Street.
Acting on a tip-off, the Manpower Ministry (MOM) raided the premises and found four workers living in the toilet.
Further investigations showed that they cooked, ate and slept there.
MOM said that it is the first time that it has prosecuted an employer for such an offence.
The Ministry added that it has stepped up its enforcement actions against employers who house their workers under conditions that endanger the latter's safety and health.
Between January and May this year, 116 employers were found to have provided unacceptable housing for their foreign workers.
Of these, 18 were fined and the others were issued warning letters.
The premises used to house foreign workers must be approved by Government agencies that include the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) and the National Environment Agency (NEA).
MOM also said in the statement that employers who breach their duties to properly house their workers will be fined up to $5,000 or jailed for six months or both.
