Festive light-up at Chinatown to celebrate Lunar New Year
By Wong Siew Ying, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 20 January 2008 0007 hrs

SINGAPORE : 128 firecrackers heralded the approach of the lunar year of the rat as Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong officiated the festive light-up at Chinatown on Saturday evening.

Singapore's Chinatown

This is the fifth year that firecrackers have been used in the celebrations, and it won't be the last as they will be crackling again on February 5 and 17.

For the first time, the organisers are working with Disney to take Mickey Mouse and his friends to join in the festivities in Chinatown.

A performance featuring 368 lions has also left its mark on the Singapore Book of Records.

It is hoped that this year's celebrations at Chinatown can attract two million people. - CNA /ls
