The PRC's National Day was declared at three o'clock on October 1, 1949, in front of 300,000 people during a ceremony in Tian'anmen Square. Chairman Mao declared the founding of the People's Republic and waved the first five-star PRC flag.

In past times, the day was marked by large political gatherings and speeches, military parades, state banquets and the like. Since 2000, as China's economy developed, the national holiday lasts seven days and most workers are given time off to visit relatives and take time for traveling.:mellow3:

cool, so they did celebrate NDP every year la :biggrin4: because my mum's friend from china said they only have major NDP once every 5 or 10 years, the NDP in between are smaller scale.

The main event and parade is in Beijing. The other provinces will have other ways of celebrating but usually they will have concerts by famous international and / or local singers. And not forgetting the holiday breaks for the working class and children who are in schools.:mellow3:

Perhaps compared to the population of China, the NDP looks smaller in scale.

In SG, where the island is so small and everyone knows about NDP, it seems like a big-scale event which everyone knows.

I think one celebration at beijing alone can be ten times more grand than what we have here, partially due to the people...
