Catholic High training basketball team to compete in YOG 2010

SINGAPORE: Catholic High School aims to field a basketball team at the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in 2010.
With just two years to go before the big event, the boys are training up to eight times a week to make the cut.

Jabez Su, captain of the basketball team at Catholic High School, said: "My school training is pretty tough – eight times a week – and the training is tough and tiring. Every morning, we will report in school at 6.45am just to train."
And the boys are undaunted about competing against the best teams in the world.
"I think with hard work and vigorous training, we will do quite well," said Jonathan Cher, vice-captain of the basketball team.
Jabez added: "I think it's the psychology – every Singapore athlete would think size... they'll always be bigger than us but I think if we have our teamwork, if we cooperate well, we should be able to beat them."
Ian Chew, Level Head, Physical Education, Catholic High School, said: "This is the Youth Olympics, meant for youths from 14 to 18 years old, and we do have talent on our shores. If we were to focus and develop our talent, I think we stand a very good chance."
To boost their chances, Catholic High has worked out a comprehensive training schedule.
"We're very confident about our own programme. They train every day – both in the morning and in the afternoon because this is the optimal way for them to balance their sports and studies," said Mr Chew.
Singapore intends to take part in each of the 26 sporting events at the Youth Olympic Games 2010.
