Bird flu spreads in Asia Infected
TWO Vietnamese women have tested positive for the H5N1 bird flu virus.
But one has recovered while the other is in intensive care, a state-run newspaper reported on Tuesday.
The two women, aged 28 and 29, are from the northern provinces of Thanh Hoa and Ha Nam.
They were both been admitted to a hospital in Hanoi.
The 29-year-old woman from Thanh Hoa was infected after eating an infected duck.
She has since recovered, while the other woman was using a respirator to breathe.
Both Thanh Hoa and Ha Nam are among a list of 15 provinces and a city that have reported bird flu outbreaks in poultry since early May.
Recovered
Vietnam's first bird flu patient in 18 months has made a full recovery, but health authorities warned that the deadly virus was spreading in the country's fowl population.
He was released on Monday from Hanoi's Bach Mai hospital, where he had been treated since mid-May.
A second patient, who fell ill in late May, is still undergoing treatment.
Culling of fowls in Bangladesh
Meanwhile, bird flu has spread to another district in Bangladesh, forcing authorities to cull 5,000 more chickens.
The infected chickens were buried after the H5N1 strain of bird flu was detected at a farm in Rangpur district, 450km north-west of the capital, Dhaka.
With the latest cull, some 165,000 chickens have now been slaughtered and nearly 1.6 million eggs destroyed on 63 farms in 13 districts since the virus was first detected near Dhaka in March.
