TONED bodies clad in skimpy bikinis while playing beach volleyball may be a thing of the past, at the South Pacific Games.


Locals in Samoa have raised concerns about the official uniforms for beach volleyball, reported the Australian Associated Press.

Women volleyball players at the South Pacific Games will now wear shorts and cropped sports tops.

This is a stark difference from what female Olympic volleyball players wear - a close-fitting top and briefs with a side width no greater than 7cm, or a close-fitting one-piece uniform.

Samoa made up of mostly Congregationalist Christians, is currently hosting South Pacific Games teams from 22 Pacific nations.

Mr Bryan Milikin, spokesman at the games, told New Zealand-based Biu FM: 'In the Pacific, the women are sensitive to the fact that perhaps their brothers might be around ... Even though they are probably very comfortable not wearing much.

'It is just the fact that family might be around and people, who are not supposed to see your body, are going to see it.'
