Some ATMs only Japanese only. Some accept debit cards only.

But you never know until you try it.

Do they use katakana or hiragana on the atm?

Just look out for the cirrus logo to check if you can withdraw cash from that machine

Unfortunately for you, many ATMs in Japan do not accept cards issued outside Japan. However, fret not! The ATMs in all 7-Eleven outlets do accept foreign-issued cards and best thing is, their menus have option in English!

Before you go, better check if your card is accepted by international ATMs.

You are saying that they have ATMs inside 7-11? or outside? But i think they will charge a commission exchange rate by the bank right?

Inside for most.

Katakana and Hiragana are written Japanese syllabaries. Hiragana is more cursive and rounded, whereas Katakana is square-ish in appearance and commonly used for writing foreign loan words.

Hiragana is used to represent praticles and grammatical endings particular to Japanese
Katakana are use to indicate the many recent brrowings from other languages.

Hiragana is their traditional "alphabets" while Katakana is used for new foreign words like macdonalds or even i-pod etc.

But you can withdraw at the Tokyo Post office.. rem to draw more than enuff .. if not you have to keep on going there to withdraw and also .. they dont open 24 hrs. If I remember correctly, they open during office hours only.
