I don't see myself as a trader but more of an investor, invest for the long term. There's one thing I would like to ask, if you know the answer. I've heard that if you want to be a long term Investor, you must have a huge pool of money to back you up. Also in case of a bear market, you will have to compensate the amount of money dipped against the original price. Is that true?

Josh. | | | | | I'm a newbie investor...so please take what I say with a pinch of salt...
What I feel is, if you want to be an investor, you have to do alot of homework on the company you plan to invest in. If you feel that the fundamentals of the company is good in the long run and you know why you are investing into it, after that you make your purchase.
For a long-term investor, you may not need to have large amount of cash on hand at all times, but it would be good to constantly invest when you see a good opportunity. In cases of a bear market, alot of investors will be tempted to sell and cut their losses. If you find that your holdings have fallen below your average purchase price, but the fundamentals of the company has not changed and your objective is still on track, den it is ok to buy more to average down. I don't hold alot of cash, but I make it a point to save 40% of my salary every month. Hopefully this percentage will increase this year.
You will also need to have strong holding power and not be affected by ripples in the ocean. I myself do get affected at times and either sell too early, or sell too late.
Here are 2 examples.
Example 1: I was allocated 1 lot of CapitaRetail China Trust during its IPO subscription. Very lucky, 1 share costs $1.13. On its 1st trading day, it went up by more than 50%. Being a newbie investor, I panicked when I saw some profit-taking at $2 per share. Feeling the heat, I decided to take profit at $1.82 before my holiday trip overseas. Now, we see this stock settling at around $3.
Example 2: The recent market correction caught my eye since day 1 and I have been monitoring my holdings tightly for any sudden movements. True enough, one of my counters, Pine Agritech fell from $0.71 to $0.60 on the first day of the market correction. I monitored this stock closely for that day and during lunch, I decided to take profit and run because my average purchase price for this counter is around $0.55. After lunch, I sold this counter at $0.65. Right now, the counter is hovering at $0.64.
I learnt that once you made the decision to buy a counter due with some objectives, sell them only when the objectives have been breached. After you sold them, the counter could go up or down so don't feel the heartache when it goes up because you know that your heart would ache more if it went down and you didn't sell.
Hope this helps. To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.: Asia Solution Kenetics

1. Drop out from the game, never to return.
2. Drop out from the game, and to return a wiser person.
