So eg. bands like Panic At The Disco and Paramore, although they are quite successful in mainstream radio, they are still considered indie bands under the indie label, Fueled By Ramen.

Kings of Convenience? i think their indie enough though their already quite popular, i like gold in the air of summer, caymen islands, sing softly to me and i'd rather dance with you

I guess that's a problem that many indie bands face, they want to remain true to their indie fans but also want to achieve success by reaching a bigger audience (meaning mainstream mtv, pop radio audience). When an artist gets too popular, they will lose appeal to some of their old fans who only likes obscure stuff. |

Stone Roses (My Fave)
Charlatans
Lush (seriously under-rated)
Ride
Kitchens of Distinction
Mercury Rev
Apples in Stereo
Pulp
Travis (think they are indie too)
That's all i can think of offhand. |

Don't think an indie band needs to be signed to an indie label in order to be called "indie". Think it's more important for indie bands to have control over their music and sound, to develop their own distinctive identity and not just copy whatever's out there blindly. Or put out cookie cutter records like those by boybands. To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. |

Radiohead is in the "electronic" or "art" rock sub genre of Alternative music, and Smashing Pumpkins, well lol they have pretty much experimented with all sorts of genres.
A list of my fave Indie Rock musicians:
The Libertines
Arctic Monkeys
Interpol
The Black Keys
FOALS
Broken Social Scene
Mew Whacko Jacko Steals the Elephant Man's bones! |

Hope they get back to Singapore next year!
