But technically, a band is considered indie as long as it is under an indie record label. So eg. bands like Panic At The Disco and Paramore, although they are quite successful in mainstream radio, they are still considered indie bands under the indie label, Fueled By Ramen.

but P!@ATD is like electro punk and stuff and already damn famous like the other bands under fueled by ramen maybe they would be propelled to a non-indie label?

Kings of Convenience? i think their indie enough though their already quite popular, i like gold in the air of summer, caymen islands, sing softly to me and i'd rather dance with you

Idk, maybe they like to be under an indie label because it gives them more... street-cred? Makes them seem "cooler" to be indie. If they move to a big record label, some self-righteous punk will start calling them a "sell-out".

I guess that's a problem that many indie bands face, they want to remain true to their indie fans but also want to achieve success by reaching a bigger audience (meaning mainstream mtv, pop radio audience). When an artist gets too popular, they will lose appeal to some of their old fans who only likes obscure stuff.

I'm rather old school, haven't checked out the indie scene in quite awhile, still listening to the oldies.

Stone Roses (My Fave)
Charlatans
Lush (seriously under-rated)
Ride
Kitchens of Distinction
Mercury Rev
Apples in Stereo
Pulp
Travis (think they are indie too)

That's all i can think of offhand.

So would you guys consider bands like Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins to be indie or not?

Don't think an indie band needs to be signed to an indie label in order to be called "indie". Think it's more important for indie bands to have control over their music and sound, to develop their own distinctive identity and not just copy whatever's out there blindly. Or put out cookie cutter records like those by boybands.

Indie can either mean, the band is under an independent label OR, they play alternative music. Well that's what I think. Indie rock is a sub-genre of alternative rock, and indie too has sub genres such as math rock, post hardcore, dance punk, etc.

Radiohead is in the "electronic" or "art" rock sub genre of Alternative music, and Smashing Pumpkins, well lol they have pretty much experimented with all sorts of genres.

A list of my fave Indie Rock musicians:

The Libertines
Arctic Monkeys
Interpol
The Black Keys
FOALS
Broken Social Scene
Mew

Whacko Jacko Steals the Elephant Man's bones!

Jason Mraz.. His songs are interesting~
He's quite a laid back funny sort-of guy.. His band members are interesting too..
this other fella: Jamie Scotts and the town..
They are one really funny bunch of guys who are serious in their music..

Met both bands at work.. real fun to be around with...
Hope they get back to Singapore next year!

FYI, You can find Jamie on: http://www.jamiescottandthetown.com/
