Hi there, i am not sure if i am in the right forum or not but just to share something about adopting over here... i have been trying to adopt a dog into my life for some time and finally i found one... the owner decided to give her dog up for free adoption and only asked for the charges of the cage, comb, shampoo, etc... total sum is just a small small amount... pick up the dog at 8.30pm just now... over at the house, 10 month shih tzu seems to be ok and kinda friendly but a little tired... excited over adopting the dog, i pick it up and went home happily with my dad... but before leaving the hse i did question why did they placed up thr puppy for adoption... the answer was too noisy....

upon reaching my house, i carried the cage to the sleeping area, gave a little food and fresh water and a stress ball to keep it happy..... tried to sit beside the cage and talk to him... something is not right!! a close look on the puppy and i discover that the puppy is losing it's fur and the tail seems to be infested with flea eggs... i spray the tail with some of the anti itch spray and tried to calm it down as it was whining loudly and scratching itself... i presume that the whining is due to in a new environment and so it's a but afraid... hang around the cage and discover the puppy doesn't seems to be normal... not active and seems to be a bit depress... i am so upset that i actually cried as i felt that it's all my fault of adopting it and it become unhappy coming to my house.... a further check on the dog and discover the eyes were not right too... it doesn't sparkle and seems to be gloomy... check the paws this time and discover that there were sign of fleas too... i believe the scratching is coming fr the flea causing the poor darling to be in pain.... at this point the puppy is whining so loudly and scratching away hard... tried talkin to it and it completely ignore me... i guess the only way is to wait till tomorrow morning and bring it to the vet for a checkup...

after a while, the whining didn't stop and the puppy looks really depress.... i called up the owner and told her that i will be sending the puppy back to her immedialtely even it was already 12am!! i know that this may sounds bad as i had actually rejected a puppy b'cos he was flea infested... but no!! i pity the puppy as it was actually missing it's owner too much... upon reaching the house, the puppy actually calm down from the whining and stand up to greet the owner at the door... i can imagine how much he misses the owner... it really breaks my heart to see the state of the puppy but it's whining is something that i wasn't able to stop... she returned me the 'adoption fee' and i tried to pass her $35 to ask her to please bring the poor puppy to a vet for check up as they hasn't done that even though they know that the puppy is itching... **i had initally didn't want to take any of the $85 back from her as i wanted her to bring the poor puppy to the vet for treatment** i wa rejected and she said that she'll bring the puppy to the vet for a checkup after i told her what i had actually discovered from the puppy after being 3 hours with it.... sorry for insisting to return the puppy to you at such a late hour but the puppy is really too stress at my house and there is no way i am able to calm it down...

this tread i am not trying to pinpoint anything but it's just that i think if you do want to have a pet, please be responsible for it. if something is not right with it, always bring it to the vet for a checkup and not just put the poor animal up for adoption.... have you ever imagine how the pet actually felt when i brought it back to my flat?? but this experience also taught me a very important thing, that is never to adopt any pets and if i really wanted another dog, go to a pet shop... or rather... just stick to the current drawf hamsters i am caring for... my hamster are my everything since the day they come into my life.... i could still remember my previous hamster had a big big cut on it's stomach resulted in fighting with another... i immediately send the naughty one back to the pet shop and sent the injured one to the vet located at Paya Lebar**happens to be my mother's friend**... i nursed it back to health and from that day,our bond is united... until the day it died off, i cried till my eyes were red and swollen.... now my 2 darlings are part of my life and i always check on them for any wounds.. so far so good...

please take this as an advice.... if you do want to have a pet, care for it for life... and if really want to put it up for adoption, be a responsible owner and nursed it back to health before adoption.....

agree... taking the dog back to the owner as i wanted her to learn to be a responsible person and not just pushing problems aside....

something to share, this shih tzu wasn't the one that i had wanted to adopt... i was about to view a 4 yr old shih tzu tomorrow at Jurong but i gave up and decided on this 10 mth shih tzu that i decided to bring home... now being shocked by this outcome, i am not sure if i ever dare to have a dog in my life anymore...

as for the jurong 4 yr old shih tzu...

As i read, This means that the person who is giving away her dog is such a heartless person. Firstly, giving away dog is so wrong >> to me.
secondly, never take care properly!! did't even notice that there is something wrong with her dog...the dog is afraid because of suddently change of home. After 1 wk i'm sure will be okay with it. if i will you, i will keep the dog for 3 days, in this 3 day, i'll include bringing the dog to vet and take good care of it. i dun trust the person who is giving away the dog will be bringing the POOR dog to VET.

hi there, i completely agree with you that the owner is a very heartless person but from my point of view, it seems that it's the parents that insist the puppy to be out as the little 18 yr old owner seems sad when i collect the puppy... i decided to return the puppy cos i really cannot bear to see it whining so loudly for its owner... no matter how i tried to confort it, it's of no use... i am really sad to see it like that, i felt it was like a baby crying very hard for its parents.... i already told the girl what i have discovered and told her that only a vet is able to help and not self medication... although i have doubts that she will take good care of the dog but i am so happy to see the dog all alert again after it reaches back to the house.... haiz... i can only pray hard now.....

if it was me, i would straight away bring the dog to a vet, the very moment i found something is not right... dragging the case don't seem like a good option cos i believe the dog have been unwell for a certain time... beside, i don't trust the owner would really bring the dog to a vet, even would, how many days later? i would choose to fix the situations first, than keep the dog for awhile to see if it can get use to my hse... even if the dog's choice was to go back to the ex owner, more or less i would feel better as i know at least it's health is good! and maybe with a better health, the ex owner may treat it better ba!

Y not adopt frorm SPCA. I'm sure dogs at SPCA will be good in health.

oh no... i seems to have done something wrong already... the first thought that came into my mind is to let the dog have a piece of mind first which i think that only back at the owner would be able to calm it down... wanted to bring the puppy to vet but it was 9.30pm at night already.... i am so guilty now... wanted to do something good for the puppy on my birthday today so decided to send it back but now after listening to all of the advice here, i am wrong.... i can only pray that the puppy heal soon....

had wanted to adopt from spca but the breed they have there are all not HDB approved... so no choice

just to correct you, flea egg doesnt react to the anti itch solution, so dont waste your money & time on those products..

i would suggest u shave down the puppy as u mentioned that it is infested with fleas and ticks.. if possible give him a shower.. when he is 50% dry, can use "FRONTLINE SPRAY" all over his body and this will immediately kill all flea and ticks (can be purchased at pet shop or vet) will be abit oily, no worries, is normal.

then wait for days later, apply another frontline product on him.. this one is to apply at the back of his neck (can be purchased at pet shop or vet - around $35+) it will last for one month to ensure no ticks and flea on him. do remember that no showers are allowed 2 days BEFORE and AFTER the application. follow the instruction lor.

another reason of it being restless, my guess is that maybe it could be anemia? cos all the ticks and flea sucking the blood of the dog mah... if this is the case, u can try to give some pork liver.. for a short period(not recommended for long term) , just to make sure he got back some nutrient back lor..

when one animal is in a new environment, it sure to feel insecured and since he is still a puppy, he will feel scared.. i think what u can offer is your care and concern... shower it with your patience.. spend more time with him... maybe try playing with him..and bring him for short walk? give yourself and the dog to know each other... very soon, u will experience the joy of dog-mummy
