SERENE Tan Xian Lin is a contestant with a mission.
She wants to cultivate in Singaporeans an increased appreciation of Chinese dance.
The 17-year-old is part of the six soloists and four groups who made it to the Hi-Def Showtime competition final.
The final is being held today at the Courts Megastore outlet in Tampines.
Serene said: 'We (my dance group and I) are not taking part in the competition for the TV or the prize money.
'We want to raise awareness among Singaporeans about the beauty of Chinese dance.'
STUDYING CHINESE DANCE
The Singaporean is a student at Beijing's Haiyun Cultural Arts School.
Though her school holidays there ended on 5Mar, she stayed on in Singapore for the contest.
Serene, who has been dancing since she was 4years old, said: 'Nowadays, people are doing hip-hop, contemporary and modern dance, but very few understand Chinese dance.
'We feel that this is a very big chance to tell people about Chinese dance through Hi-Def.'
Participants for the contest were required to perform a 30-second routine on the benefits and features of HDTV, which was filmed and put online.
People then voted for the best performers online.
Voting began on 10 Mar and ended 4 Apr. About 400,000votes were cast.
At the final tomorrow, The New Paper readers who attend the show can take part in a lucky draw to win a mobile phone. (See coupon below.)
The competition, organised by the Media Development Authority of Singapore, is to raise awareness on the benefits of High-Definition Television (HDTV).
Sophia Savila Boey, 7, who also won voters over with her dancing skills, is another finalist performing today.
Yesterday, her mother, Mrs Anna Boey, 38, said: 'She has a little bit of a fever. School has been so busy, and there's also a rehearsal tonight.
'I just told her, 'You do your best'.'
The Primary 2 student will be performing a 21/2-minute-long routine to a remix of seven songs that Mrs Boey specially compiled for the competition.
Mrs Boey said: 'I took a day to do the dance remix. It's in four languages - Hindi, Malay, English and Chinese.'
Asked if she was anxious about performing in front of an audience, Sophia replied: 'No, I won't be nervous if there are a lot of people. If there are only a few people, then I will be. I like to perform.'
Head down to Courts Megastore (Tampines) from 3pm to 6pm today to see the contestants in action.
