Default Advise on Acer Laptop

I am looking for a Window XP laptop. Can any expert advise me on whether it is worth to buy a Acer Laptop with the following spec at $1198 with 1 year international warranty.

Intel Core Solo Processor (1.8GHz, 533MHz FSB, 2MB L2 cache)
512MB DDR II RAM
15.4" WXGA Acer CrystalBrite TFT LCD, 1280 x 800, 16.7M Colours
80GB HDD (5400rpm)
DVD - Super multi Double-Layer Drive (DVD+/-RW)WLan: Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG network connection (dual-band tri- mode 802.11A/b/g) Wi-Fi Certiied
Intel 945GM Integrated 3D Graphics with up to 224MB of shared memory
Win XP Media Center Edition

The shop does not offer extended warranty. Can I purchase extended warranty with Acer direct?

hmm. i advice to:

1. upgrade ram to 1gig
2. Whats the weight? too heavy might be a burden
3. purpose of laptop ? game ? work ?
4. Win XP Media Center Edition (not too sure abt this but XP Pro is better, can run IIS and other stuff that XP MCE might not be able to? not too sure.)

the price is cheap tho. =D

I'm using an old Acer Travelmate Alpha 551...

All I can say is... You get what you pay for... It's cheap, but can't say much about quality...

Also, be warned.. Their 1 year warranty and "next day" service doesn't hold water... I once thought under warranty so can get my lappie back the next day... End up they gave me lots of excuses and held my laptop there for 1 week then finally gave it back... On top of that, servicing and labour is free under warranty, but not parts... I had to pay 60 plus for a monitor cable...

It spoilt again 1 week after the warranty ended... Thought acer would offer better quality repairs... Ended up spending close to 400, and without my laptop for 1 month, on labour and parts to replace a spoilt inverter board...

A friend of mine was charged 100 parts and labour to replace her CPU Fan... I realised some shops at Sim Lim can change for me at 20 all-in...

One piece of advice. If you're looking for good after-sales service, don't go for Acer. Only go for acer if you're really good at maintaining a computer, or have the contacts to maintain it cheaply... Otherwise you'll end up spending so much on parts and repair labour, that you'll be better off buying a new laptop...

karfield,
depends on what you're using it as?
so let say.. you're using it as OFFICE kind. it is enuf.
but if for games kind, it's better to upgrade. u gotta check e price for upgrade and compare it with other lappies. yah..
but e screen so big.. so i predict it's like bulky?

You gotta consider the usage for the laptop. If its meant for home use, no point getting a laptop. For mobility, you may want to consider a smaller laptop. But it is more expensive.

Heard from my friends that Acer sometimes give some problem when come to use the laptop although I have not tried Acer laptop myself... So I think the technology quality made by Acer may not be good but Acer is better than Dell cos Dell quality is the worst ever. My advice for you guys is not to go for Dell. Avoid purchasing the laptop from Dell. I always had so many horrible and annoying problem with my Dell laptop that I had to sell it off at too low price as offered by the shop because the shop is not willing to pay very high price for useless Dell laptop. And Dell does not have customer service based in Singapore so it would be difficult as your laptop need to be sent back to Malaysia if it need major repair. Even Dell laptop is very cheapest, don't ever buy laptop from Dell. Period.

So I think you still can go for Acer if you are keen on Acer laptop or you are on tight budget. Acer is one of the cheapest so far.

hmmm.. at wat others mentioned.. Upgrade ram. Coz 512mb ram is nv enuff. XD unless it's really for very basic use. And also.. portability! You'll regret having a heavy laptop UNLESS you dun mind using that to train ur abs? haha.. Coz u get a heavy laptop, might as well get desktop~

Based on my experience in buying notebooks or PCs, the brand is not important. It is one's luck. I have used an Acer PC for 6 years before I handed it to my colleague, and also an Acer notebook for 3 years now and still going. No issues from them. My friend bought an expensive Fujitsu, but its hard disk died just 3 months later.

I agree with the luck part. More importantly is what u buy and how long you use and take care. Long hours???? Hot environment etc???
