I know that this title has been posted twice (after checking), but since theirs were quite outdated and all, I hope to bring this topic up again as I'm heading to Ho Chi Minh City in 10 days!

So I just hope if anyone has anything to share please please do let me know! After all, this is my first time visiting Vietnam.

suggestions:

caravelle hotel: there's a bar right at the top, good view of the city esp at night

ben thanh market: for the food

cu chi tunnels: if u want to experience crawling through the tunnels like the vietcongs. you get to fire guns with live munitions at the range after that

walk ard district 1-2, i'd recommend starting from the hai ba trung stretch. art galleries with cheap buys, foot massage, great coffee(must try, better than coffee you've tried in sgp).

if u dare to travel on their old soviet propellor planes(domestic flights), head to nha trang. its along the coast, a few 4-5star jap resorts there, really cheap seafood. good place for relaxing

oh btw most locals will try to cheese you off, so never buy anything without attempting to bargain

pho is vietnam's signature beef noodles. white rice noodles + beef + broth.
depending on the stall, sometimes u get different types of beef
usually served with raw bean sprouts and lemon as side dish

Any small group of two or four travelling to Ho Chi Minh from 15th to 18th August. We are travelling and will be nice if we meet a few other like minded people.

check out the war museum
locals friendly but watch out for the taxis with the dodgy meters

HCMC !! What a 'wonderful' city!!

haha.. i had my both great and 'scary' experience all at once in HCMC last year!!

Great - it was a nice trip where i visited orphanage and school for street kids ... heart-touching experience and i remembered that we went to a moutain near Tay Ninh ... it was quite a nice one if you have some local guide to accompany you there ... quite a long journey (1 or 2 hours if not mistaken..)a breath=taking view from the mountain too !! There are many district in HCM just choose several that you would like to visit ... most of the landmarks are located around District 1 ...

Scary experience - it was the first time i 'almost' got rob on the streets ... lol ... don't ever walk alone in the dark even it's 50m or a short distance .. i am a BIG guy (and i thought i was safe.. i was wrong!! lol) and throughout the trip i was always accompany by locals ... but then that night we were walking the night market and i was wandering around longer .. and asked my friends to go back to hotel first whic`h is located just 3 streets away ... and by the time i walked alone back to the hotel .. there was this one lady around mid-30 HUGGED me from behind and started rubbing me before i got the time to react !! haha .. wth ?! and after the shocking reaction the next moment i realised her hand was inside my pocket ... ... !!! so i yelled at her and she took off ... there was a motorbike waiting beside and luckily they never rob me by knife-point ... there were few people around but they never help ...

so remember ... ... be careful ... it's a wonderful trip but don't let these scary stuff spoil the fun !! so wakl in group ... ... Vietnam is nice .. i can say is that the all travel destination will always packed with theft/robbers so be careful ... ...

by the way .. you can improve and practice your negotiating skills here !! haha .. never buy one thing before you start bargaining !! but pls be patient and honest ... don't bargain if you never want to buy the item ...

the streets are amazing too!! my vietnam friends told me.. if you cna survive vietnam's traffic ... you can survive anywhere's !! lol ... ...

the food there is quite cheap ... ... roughly the normal restaurants serve food range from USD1 and above ... ... (sometimes you can cheaper price at certain places) .. of course most transactions are to be made in DONGS ... lol ...

I went there last year in march! I also went to Dalat! Dalat is better! Cos it's cooler (weather) and more peaceful! But HCM city was fun as well! The shopping at those night markets involves a lot of bargaining! HAHHAHA! But the stuff are damn cool and cheap! Must bargain eh!

The hotel I lived in was SO SCARY. 6 of us (friends and I) managed (JUST MANAGED) to fit in the cramped lift and when it reached first floor, it stopped. STOPPED OKAY. The door didn't open. OUR HEARTS WERE IN OUR MOUTHS AND we felt a shiver down our spines like that can! OMGGGG. Then to our RELIEF, IT OPENED. HAHAHHAA OMGGGGGGGGG. SO SCARY LAH. So packed somemore. AND I'M CLAUSTROPHOBIC. ACTUALLY, the lift is LIKE THAT. It takes some time for the door to open so..yea...we "over-freaked" ourselves out.

HAHA. We also visited factories and all. It was alright I guess. Cos' it was an economics school trip.
