TOKYO - AT LEAST one person was killed and 7 injured in a shooting at a sports club in southwestern Japan on Friday, news reports said.
An unidentified man was shot dead at a sports club in the city of Sasebo on the southwestern island of Kyushu, Kyodo News agency reported, citing local police.

Seven other people, including an unspecified number of children, were taken to a hospital, Kyodo and public broadcaster NHK said.

Police are looking for the shooter, who briefly holed up in the sports club before making a getaway, NHK said.

Local police were not immediately available to comment on the reports.

The attack comes amid an apparent turf war among underground groups on Kyushu.

Last month, a reputed organised crime leader was shot to death and his driver fatally stabbed in Fukuoka, just weeks after the brazen fatal shooting of a patient at a hospital who was mistaken for gang member. -- AP
