Singapore Arts Festival 2010 (14 May – 13 June)

Who says an arts education isn’t important? Come support our emerging arts scene at the annual Singapore Arts Festival! Engage your senses; immerse yourself in drama, music and dance at our local concert halls. This year, performances include a most delightful blend of the different aspects of the arts, including a new dance film genre and an exploration of a mix of tradition and contemporary.

SAF 2010 opens with a magical fire garden installation by the internationally renowned French fire alchemist Compagnie Carabosse. For 3 nights, witness an enchanting scene of more than 7000 fire pots burning at the Empress Place Precinct and Esplanade Park!

Highlights of the festival include internationally awarded playwright Tim Crouch’s retelling of Shakespeare’s Twelvth Night and A Midsummer’s Night Dream in two separate performances, ‘I, Malvolio’ and ‘I, Peaseblossom’. ‘The Manganiyar Seduction’ by acclaimed Indian theatre director Roysten Abel features more than 40 Indian musicians in a theatrical presentation of colourful Indian folk music. ‘Lady Macbeth’, a Korean retelling of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, fuses Western perspectives with Korean traditional shamanistic views.

The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, one of the world’s leading chamber orchestra, however, is also presenting us with a series of classics together with Grammy award-winner violinist Joshua Bell.

National Art Museum Special – Ming Wong’s ‘Life of Imitation’ (22 Apr – 22 Aug)

Learn about the Golden Age of Singapore’s cinema in the 1950s and 60s. Ming Wong’s exhibition features a reinterpretation of works by P. Ramlee, Douglas Sirk and Wong Kar Wai, all of whom have left legacies in the history of Singapore’s cinema.

Through the reinterpretations of these films, the artist questions the issues of roots, hybrid, and the politics of becoming. Viewers can also get to see cinema posters by Singapore’s last surviving billboard painter and film-maker Sherman Ong’s documentaries.

The exhibition was first presented at the Singapore Pavilion, 53rd Venice Biennale 2009, clinching the Biennale’s Special Jury Mention award.
