In today’s fast-paced, technologically-advanced society, we often find ourselves relying on the Web to get everything done. We connect with friends online, shop online, entertain ourselves online, and basically do everything possible online. What’s more is that the internet is now accessible everywhere – free wireless at certain locations, through our iPhones and Blackberrys, etc. We are so reliant on the internet now, that we have begun to take for granted the existence of the Worldwide Web.
What will happen if we find ourselves cut off from the Web completely (momentarily, unless for some reason you find yourself stranded on some deserted island)?
Here is a survival guide SGClub has come up with for all you netizens out there if/when (for some reason or another) you find yourself cut off from the online community:
TOP 10 WAYS TO SURVIVE WITHOUT THE INTERNET (in no order of importance)
1. Read the newspaper.
Naturally, the news are not as updated as they are online, but the most important and relevant news are the ones published daily. The internet does not provide a filter for news, so we may often get bombarded with trivial or irrelevant information that the daily paper filters off regularly.
2. Call, instead of IMing/ Msning/ Skyping/ Emailing.
It’s time to use the basic functions of your phone. Call that friend instead of instant messaging. Hearing his/ her voice is a much more effective way of communication rather than reading messages off the screen. Certain studies have shown that to maintain a friendship/ relationship, one must at least hear his/her friend’s voice within 6 months.
3. Go to your local musical/ play
Rather than watching some drama serial online or going to the cinema, why not go to a musical or play instead? Sometimes we need time away from the mass pop culture and indulge in more artistic expressions. We hardly realize this, but the arts is in fact one of the best stimulants for the development of our character. Learning how to appreciate it has definite lifelong benefits!
4. Meet up in person
Instead of constantly meeting online, why don’t you meet your friend in person to catch up? Spending time together physically definitely increases intimacy and strengthens the friendship/ relationship. Of course, in the case of meeting up with online friends (or people you have never actually met), it may be a slightly different case and some basic precautions must be taken beforehand.
5. Read a book instead of Youtubing.
How long has it been since you have last touched a book? Indulge yourself in literary works instead of getting addicted to Korean dramas – the inability to access these videos may be a blessing in disguise! Enrich and entertain yourself with a good read!
6. Tune in to your local broadcasting station.
Listen to the radio – sometimes you may learn more about a particular culture, or a new music trend, things that you would never find out if you are adamant on listening only to what’s playing on your iTunes. Tune in to a few channels – you’ll be amazed at how much you can learn. Tune in to the classical music station too (Symphony 92.4 FM); classical music has become so overshadowed by pop culture music in our society today that most of us have forgotten how to appreciate it.
7. Revive your hobby or Get New Ones
How long has it been since you last assembled a model airplane or did a painting or two? It's time to revive those long-lost hobbies of yours and expose yourself to the simpler pleasures of life. These hobbies develop a different side of you that is most likely neglected with all that time spent on Facebook. Have you always wanted to go to the haunted spots in Singapore but never had the chance to? Have a secret yearning to try out bungee jumping but never dared to? Longing to go backpacking by yourself? Life is too short for so much hesitation. Go ahead and do what you’ve always wanted to do – these are great learning experiences. Instead of surfing the net excessively as most Singaporeans tend to do, constantly challenging ourselves and moving out of our comfort zone would enable us to grow more as a person.
8. Take a walk in the park/ by the beach
Relax your eyes; doing some light exercises will help you keep fit instead of staring at the computer screen 24/7. Take a walk or jog at a nearby park or the beach and enjoy the natural surroundings; being around nature is therapeutic! Instead of blasting music from your iTunes, why not listen to the birds and crickets and enjoy the sight of natural greenery? This may be more emotionally fulfilling!
9. Spend time with your family instead of staring at the screen in front of you right now
Think you’ve been spending more time in front of the computer screen instead of with your loved ones? Time to change your lifestyle a little! Of course, your working lifestyle cannot be helped, but at least a good work-life balance should be maintained to maintain healthy family relationships. Everyone knows having quality family time together is best – try to have more meals together, and make weekends family days!
10. Get up and enrich yourself, don’t be a couch potato!
A constant pursuit of knowledge and new skills will make you a better person. If you have some free time to space, take up some classes or workshops, pick up a new skill, or learn what you have always intended to learn. Purely having the idea is one thing, but getting down and really doing it is another. As they say, learning IS a lifelong process. Never stop learning, and you may very well find yourself leading a more fulfilled life!
