If you hear the name Jeong Ji-hoon it is quite possible that you might not recognize him and rest of the world know this entertainer by the name of “Rain”. This person has made his own identity in the world of entertainers and has huge fan following not just in one country but all across the world. This great personality from Korea was born on June 25, 1982. You just have to name it and you will find him doing everything. He is a versatile personality and has made tremendous contributions in the area of dance, acting, modeling, singing, designing and even business.
Let us have an insight into the early life of Rain which made him attain the fame and name he has today. Like every normal child he spent his childhood days by living along with his parents and younger sister named Jeong Hanna in a place called Hongik University. Rain was quite an introvert and had least interest in talking to others but despite this fact he knew that he is passionate about dance. Out of this passion for dance, he had a dream of being successful in the area of dance, and he started working hard day and night to achieve his dream. But due to his regular practice for dance his studies were neglected and scored less marks in school. Even the low scores did not make him weak and he continued with this dance. Soon he joined Anyang High School of Arts from where he got his first lesson on acting and continued with his dance. Even after getting admitted to this school his personality got divided into acting and dance and he felt truant on many occasions.
Later in the year 2000 he got shattered completely as his mother passed away because she was suffering from diabetes. But sooner happiness came into his life as he was appointed as trainee for JYP Entertainment. At the same time he was also working as a backup dancer. Despite getting this work he was unsatisfied and disheartened for being rejected many times just because he does not look good.
Rise of a Star: 2002 - 2003
After facing all these hardships in life his life took a positive turn and he debut with his album in the year 220-2003. The one year proved really great for him as he debuted both as a singer and actor. The first album which was released was named “Bad Guy” and soon after there was launched second album named “Handshake”. His career in acting started on with KBS drama and Sand Doo! Let’s Go To School.
In the consecutive years he gained popularity in Korea and came into picture with large numbers of albums and serials and gave remarkable performances. In the year 2004 he worked in a popular drama called “Full House” in which he was paired with the most popular actress of Korea called Song Hye Kyo. The drama was aired in many other countries which include Malaysia, Indonesia, United States, Vietnam, Thailand, Hong Kong and United States. His great acting skills won him the best actor award at the KBS acting award.
The third album launched by Rain called Its Raining was a huge success and according to reports the total units of the album sold all across the world are 1,074,000. Then he went on his Rainy Day 2005 Tour which was started in Seoul and was followed by Tokyo and Hong Kong. The popularity of Rain can be accounted with the fact that around 150,000 tickets were sold in 8 cities for this concert. Rain gave his first solo concert in Japan which was called Rainy Day Japan held at Tokyo International Forum and to a surprise all the tickets for this concert were sold off just after 30 seconds when sale of tickets started.
After getting huge success in his concert and tour in the year 2006 he came up with his fourth album called Rain’s World. After proving himself in areas of music and drama he worked in his own film named “I’m a Cyborg, But That’s OK”. The film was directed by Park Chan-wook. Again with his incredible performance in this film he proved that he can do acting with ease. The film was selected as the opening film for Hong Kong International Film Festival. Not only had this but the film also got the Alfred Bauer Award at the 57th Berlin International Film Festival. Rain also got the best actor award at the 43rd Baeksang award for his performance in the film.
After getting truly huge success in Korea and making place in hearts of all Koreans, Rain decided to move to others countries and show people his talent and skills. With this thought he moved to different countries and gave live performances to win hearts of people all around the world. The different countries where he gave performances are Asia and United States. Then in year 2007 he launched his fifth album called Rainism and acted for the first time in an American film called Wachowski Brothers which was directed by Speed Racer. Till date he has done lots of work in the field of dancing, acting and singing and even today he is moving on and on. The person who was repeatedly rejected by saying that he does not have good looks was listed in the list of Most Beautiful People in the year 2007.
But we know that behind every rosy thing there are some problems and issues. The same was there in the life of Rain. In his life there were many legal issues which even led to cancellation of his concerts. In the year 2007 when he was on world tour many concerts were cancelled which were supposed to take place in different countries like Toronto, Shanghai, San Francisco, Hawaii and Los Angeles.
But even after all these controversies; Rain is still able to make a position in the hearts of his fans. He is a person who has full dedication towards his work and this is one of the reasons why he is at the top position today.
