Okays, it is very simple actually. But it sounds complex with words. For me I group Trance into 3 category(of course they have sub categories), Vocal, Melodic, Vocal-Melodic. Each category have different styles like heavy, hard or psy.
It will be much more easier if you go to imeem.com to preview some trance music. However, there are so many kinds of trance that you might get confused with each of them. Personally, I recommend melodic trance(in another term-mellow trance). It is much more soothing and peaceful especially when you're doing your work or sleeping.(Please don't think that mellow trance is a orchestra. It is a mixture of piano with other adjusted frequencies of other instruments)
To give you a definition to your question: the word Trance means hypnotic. Trance + music = Hypnotic music. The music that you hear in Trance usually allows the listener to somehow be drunk in his own world, cos of the unknown tracks that the Trance music plays. Well, everyone have their own Trance preferences, so find out what's yours!
Hope I have answered to your doubts. Thank you.
