There are a number of markets over the weekend, southbank market, st kilda beach market..
THe red hill market is quite a distance away and you'll prob need to drive there... But these places would be more for handicraft...

Yeah, I have plans to visit the Victoria Market and the Prahan Market ... but that's about all the markets I know ... didn't know there are so many other markets~
Just did a Google ... I think the Red Hill market is located at the Mornington Peninsula area ... which is quite a drive away from the city.

As for discount stores, I have heard that I should comb the Richmond area. Now that you have just provided info with regards to the Fitzroy area, that's one more area to look into!
