THE 5-per-cent discount on 500 NTUC FairPrice items will be extended for two more months, the supermarket's managing director Seah Kian Peng announced on Monday.

The items on offer include essential foodstuff like bread, rice, cooking oil among others. The discount scheme, which started on Dec 19, was due to end on Feb 29. But Mr Seah said: 'We received overwhelming response and feedback from customers asking us to consider extending the discount scheme.'

Combined sales of FairPrice housebrand items have risen by 40 per cent, with individual items like sales of vegetable oil up three-fold and enriched white bread, by some 30 per cent.

Extending the discount for two more months will cost the co-operative another $1 million, bringing the total to $4 million. But Mr Seah said the supermarket prides itself on its social role. At the same time, it is exploring "no frills" budget stores to cater to those with tight expenditure budget.

But Mr Seah said that Singaporeans will have to get used to shopping in these stores, as there will be no ambience, no staff to help pack purchases and packaging of items will be cut to the bare minimum.
