Actually there is 2 side of a coin. AW & AL used the Carlings Cup ties for the younger on the fringe and reserve players is for them to gain the neccessary experience in playing against other English teams.
Most of these young players might not even get on the bench unless the club suffer a list of injured players.
With the experience of having played in Carlings Cup, they would adapt better to the fast pace game of the modern EPL.
Honestly, all along the Carlings Cup aka League Cup aka Milk Cup is never the most important cup for the managers to win.
