Christmas: Is It a Beautiful Dream or a Horrible Nightmare? Hey guys, it seems that christmas is less than a month away.
'Tis the season to complain...about Christmas being spoiled by an overemphasis on the giving (and getting) of gifts.
And yes, the modern day Christmas holiday was started (in the US, at least) primarily by merchants who wanted a guaranteed "busy shopping season" every year--so you can argue that Christmas is SUPPOSED to be commercialized!
As for me, I LIKE buying gifts for others and I LOVE Christmas (especially since its a once a year thing!), so the materialism doesn't bother me so much. My family and my friends and I mutually set limits on how much we are going to spend so that nobody gets too deeply into debt, and we emphasize the social and charitable aspects of Christmas. so spending money at Christmas can be a GOOD thing, depending on how you spend it.
And let's face it, Christmas is what we make of it. It's "good for the economy", which is a consumer-based economy. You can emphasize the spiritual aspect of Christmas or the materialistic aspect: it's up to you.
As for those who are not Christians, well, I'm not assuming , as Bart Simpson did, that "Christmas is a time when people of all faiths come together to worship Jesus". But like it or not, no matter what your religious faith (or lack of it), this is "Christmas season" for good or for bad!
As for me, I'm an taoist, but I still celebrated it so wish people "Happy Christmas" or "Happy Holidays" with equal joy! Ok, so what do YOU think? Is the present day conception of Christmas fatally flawed? In other words...do you think Christmas sucks or rocks?
