i did it by hand... for all my sketches i prepare 4 pencils... 1 mechanical 2B pencil (0.5mm) for the detailing work, 1 HB pencil for the initial light and rough sketch, 1 2B pencil to shade the darker areas and finally 1 6B pencil to touch up those dark areas and add additional contrast to the whole sketch...
For the first pic.. the hair took me about 1-2 hours just fine detailing the strands of hair... i use the mechanical pencil most of the time to stroke the fine strands and then use the 6B pencil to add the darker contrasts.... so there's a bit of layering when u shade the hair...
For all my sketches.. i use normal tissue paper to get the smooth shading effect... using the tissue to blend between shadows and lighter areas... takes time to get use to it but it does give a very good outcome...
I only adjust the contrast of my sketches using photoshop so it would look as close to the original ones as seen on paper.. just waiting to borrow a digital camera so i can take a pic of the actual sketch itself as seen on paper so ppl can get to see it...
