China's multi-million epic musical "Immortality" from Chengdu comes to Singapore

The epic Chinese musical Immortality from Chengdu, China will be staged at the Esplanade Theatre from Nov 29 to Dec 2, 2006.

Immortality premiered at the grand Baoli theatre in Beijing on April 8, 2005. It became an instant hit with the audience and critics alike. A total of 390 shows has been staged since its debut. The grand musical is set to achieve another milestone with its first overseas performance in Singapore.

Immortality is based on a significant archaeological discovery in the 21st century — the Jinsha historical site. The ancient site, which is the origin of the Shu culture, was discovered in Jinsha, a village in the western suburbs of Chengdu in 2002. It immediately created a stir in the academic circles and many regarded it as "an astonishing archaeological discovery". The site's discovery lifted the mystical veil of the ancient Shu culture.

In 2004, China's popular musical icon San Bao was invited by Immortality producer Ye Dan to visit the Jinsha historical site. After several visits, San Bao was amazed by the ancient Shu culture in Chengdu. He was so mesmerised and inspired by the charm of the Jinsha heritage that he decided to base his musical on the ancient culture and wrote a beautiful love story that crosses time and space.

The result was Immortality, a musical which tells the tragic love story between a beautiful woman named "Jin" and archaeologist "Sha" that spans across 3000 years.

Stage design is one of the highlights in Immortality. From the beautiful transparent ivory lamp to the memorial arch on the street of Chengdu which are created by traditional paper-cutting, the production is a spectacular visual feast for the audience.

Said Immortality producer Ye Dan: "The stage equipment and technology used are currently the best in China. Our challenge is to change the stage sets in double-quick time to give audience the visual feast which they're hoping for."

The music in Immortality is written by the Director San Bao himself. San Bao, who is a renowned composer in China, has composed several popular hits such as "Till we meet again" and "Dark Fragrance". This time, he takes on dual roles as musician and director. He has written a total of 25 songs and 35 arias for the grand musical, ranging from a simple love song to a symphony of epic scale. Many songs featured in the musical such as "Till one day", "Forgotten" and "At that moment" became popular hits in China, and are favourite song choices for contestants in singing competitions.

Organised by Lianhe Zaobao, co-organised by Jinniu District, in Chengdu, China, and jointly produced by Chengdu Municipal Bureau of Culture, Chengdu Municipal Bureau of Television and Radio, Chengdu Daily News Group, and presented by Chengdu JinSha Sunbird Performing Arts Culture Co. Ltd, this mega musical will be staged in Singapore for the first time.

Immortality is sponsored by CapitaLand Ltd , COSCO Corporation (Singapore) and Hi-P International Limited, with support from Si Chuan Dou Hua Restaurant and C N A Group Ltd.

Synopsis of Musical Immortality

In modern Chengdu, China.

One fine winter day in 2001, a young archaeologist, Sha, came to Jinsha -- an ancient land, covered by leaves. The sound of his footsteps awoke a Wood Mime who was immured underground for thirty-one hundred years, and various groups of "hungry" spirits who were eager to see daylight. As the Wood Mime was full of joy, he decided to accompany Sha to find the Jinsha Relies in the capital of ancient Shu, as well as his beloved one, Jin. For thirty-one hundred years, besides going through countless marvellous experiences, they also suffered from various kinds of obstacles.

A thousand years ago, under the specially arranged banquet held by Lady Flower, both Jin and Sha were finally reunited after a long separation. Sha could not resist the lore supernaculum, and was love drunk. Thus, the beautiful ancient city, Chengdu, became the city of hibiscus from then on, pass it's reputation from generation to generation, and up till now.

During the battle that was fought some two thousand years ago, Sha and Wood Mime experienced a baptism in the flood of blood and fire. It became a witness of their friendship that withstood through thousands of years.

At last, in the serious gorgeous sacrifice ceremony thirty-one hundred years ago, Sha encounter Jin accidentally. There, the beloved couple who was parted for thirty-one hundred years held together inspect of others. Thus, Sha found the great history and marvellous civilisation of ancient Shu nationality. This is Jinsha, in China.
