But that curiousity cost little Mohd Nasrul Hafiz Din Malik his life.
On Tuesday afternoon, the 16-month-old drowned in his family's top-loading washing machine, reported Harian Metro.
He had been playing with his older brother, Abdillah Al-Hadi, in the kitchen of his home in Kuala Terengganu after lunch.
Then Abdillah, 7, discovered that his brother was missing and went looking for him.
As he climbed up the kitchen staircase, he noticed the washing machine on the ground beside the staircase. It was on, and the lid was open. Inside, the horrified boy saw his little brother.
Apparently, little Mohd Nasrul had climbed the stairs and leaned over the railing to open the washing machine. He then reached over for something and lost his balance.
Abdillah told Harian Metro: 'I immediately pulled my brother out and carried him to the side of the stairs and I shook him and called out his name.'
When the toddler did not respond, Abdillah called out for his parents.
The children's father, Mr Din Malik Ramli 41, rushed out and tried to revive the toddler. When he could not, he took the child to a nearby clinic, where Mohd Nasrul was pronounced dead.
Mr Din Malik said he had returned home from picking his son up from school at about 2.30pm.
He told Harian Metro: 'After I had lunch with my five children, I went to the room to rest and was surprised to hear one of my chidlren calling for help.
'I rushed out and saw Abdillah carrying Nasrul, who was not moving. Abdillah told me his brother had fallen into the washing machine and he had pulled him out.'
Mr Din Malik said that his youngest son had become very active after learning to walk. He said that he did not expect such a thing to happen as the boy had not played near the machine in the past.
