But when Malaysian VBalamurugan stopped his vehicle and got out to take a look, he saw a chilling sight.
A multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), with 15 people trapped inside, had smashed into the rear of his lorry.
Some of them were screaming. Many were not moving. Blood was everywhere.
'I was shocked to see a Naza Ria multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) lodged under the lorry, and we heard people screaming,' Mr Balamurugan, who was with a passenger, told reporters at the Mentakab police station.
The accident happened at 4.30am yesterday, at the 96.2km mark of the East Coast Highway in Temerloh, Perak, reported New Straits Times.
Out of the 15 who had squeezed into the MPV, 11 were killed - eight men and three women.
Nine of the dead are Myanmar nationals, most of whom are believed to be illegal immigrants.
They could not be identified as no documents were found on them.
The other two are Malaysians. They have been identified as Fauzi Omar, 41, from Kelantan and his brother-in-law, Rozilan Mat Zain, 37, from Putrajaya. One of them is believed to be the driver.
The four survivors, all Myanmar nationals, suffered serious injuries and were sent to Temerloh Hospital.
Only one of them is conscious, while the other three are still in a coma.
Mr Balamurugan, 23, said that when the accident happened, he was on his usual trip transporting iron ore from Kuantan to Kuala Lumpur.
MISTY ROAD CONDITIONS
Visibility was poor, as the road was shrouded in thick mist.
While Mr Balamurugan was driving at 60 to 70kmh, police told China Press that the MPV driver was believed to have been speeding at about 160 to 180kmh.
He might have been tired and was not able to see the lorry in front of him.
The MPV was trapped under the back of the lorry and dragged for 200m before stopping.
China Press reported that the vehicle was smashed so badly that firemen had to use electric saws to cut it open and pull out the bodies and survivors.
The rescue operation was said to have taken three hours.
Mr Balamurugan and his passenger escaped unhurt.
He said there were no other vehicles on the road at that time.
An MTD Prime highway patrol vehicle arrived soon after to render assistance, followed by firemen and the police.
Mr Balamurugan made a police report on the accident at the police station at about 7 am.
