 Microsoft raises $470,000 for Society for the Physically Disabled
SINGAPORE : Computer giant Microsoft has raised $470,000 for the Society for the Physically Disabled (SPD).
Most of the money came from a charity dinner on Tuesday evening.
The money will go towards the "Microsoft Accessibility and IT Centre".
It is also part of a one million dollars initiative to provide IT training for SPD members over three years.
Classes at the centre started last month and Microsoft hopes to reach out to more than 4,000 disabled people.
Courses offered include basic proficiency in computer skills and website design.
SPD said IT could help improve employment opportunities for its members so that they will no longer be limited to jobs like assembly work in factories.
The money was raised as part of the President's Challenge 2007.
The cheque was presented on Monday to President S.R. Nathan by Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer. |
