HER decomposing body lay face down in a muddy pit. There were bloody puncture wounds were over her body.
A ballpoint pen was found nearby.
The coroner believes it was this pen that was used to puncture her throat.
The grisly find was made early yesterday on a hill by a Hong Kong police search team. They were looking for a 37-year-old woman who had been reported missing by her family three weeks ago.
Her 33-year-old boyfriend, known only as Mr Su , an IT worker, was detained overnight for questioning.
The police had been unable to contact him after the victim, known only as Ms Chen, was reported missing.
He reappeared a few days later claiming that he had lost contact with her.
That made the missing persons unit, which had been handling Ms Chen's case until then, suspicious, reported Apple Daily Hong Kong.
They handed the case to officers at the homicide squad, which interviewed Mr Su many times. He repeatedly claimed to know nothing about Ms Chen's disappearance.
PHOTO CLUE
The police used the call log on Ms Chen's handphone to trace the location of her last call to the hill where her body was found.
Then, they chanced upon a photograph of Ms Chen with an unnamed man at her home that had been taken some years ago at the same hill.
Workers at a fish pond near the hill recalled seeing Ms Chen there with a man on 7 Feb, the day her family reported her missing.
Search teams were dispatched to the area, and Ms Chen's body was found just an hour later about 500m from the pond.
Preliminary investigations showed she died from stab wounds to the throat that were most likely caused by a ballpoint pen.
It was believed her body was taken to the hill in a van and dumped there.
Ms Chen reportedly came from a wealthy family and had many suitors.
She lived with her family and ran a cosmetics business.
