Madam IT began with an SMS and ended with an acid attack, injury and death.
Mr Zulkifli Salim, 49, was at his in-laws' home in Terengganu on Monday when his wife's handphone went off. She had received an SMS.
Mr Zulkifli read the SMS and became upset, reported Bernama news agency.
According to early news reports, the couple had a heated argument, and MrZulkifli allegedly splashed a combination of hydrochloric and sulphuric acid on his wife's back and face.
State CID deputy chief Supt Khairi Ahrasa told reporters that after reading the message, Mr Zulkifli accused his wife, Madam Ramlah Mohamad, 26, of having an affair with another man.
'In the heat of anger during the quarrel, he splashed acid on his wife's back and face and he drank it. His wife's cries of pain drew neighbours' attention,' MrKhairi said.
Neighbours made a police report, and the police rushed to the scene.
Mr Zulkifli was rushed to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital while his wife was taken to the Besut Hospital.
Mr Khairi said Mr Zulkifli died at the hospital while his wife, who suffered burns on her back, head and cheek, was transferred to a hospital in Kota Baru for further treatment.
NO FIGHT?
Madam Ramlah told Harian Metro that she still loved her husband.
She said: 'I love my husband, even though I never thought that such a thing would happen.'
Madam Ramlah denied having a disagreement with her husband before the incident.
She said she, her husband and their two young children were sleeping in the living room of her parent's home at the time.
She said she woke up when she felt a burning sensation on her back and face.
Madam Ramlah's mother, Madam Rohani Ali, 50, said she was awoken by cries of help.
She told Harian Metro: 'I saw smoke in the living room, and was shocked to see Zulkifli groaning in pain and holding his chest. Ramlah was lying down crying in pain.
'I panicked and a neighbour came to help me.'
The couple used to live in Penang, but Madam Ramlah returned to her parents' house in Kampung Raja last month and worked at a foodstall in the village.
Mr Zulkifli, who works in Penang, had gone to his wife's house last Thursday.
