We just visited Melbourne last yr. My group was 3 adults and 3 seniors. We drove to Philip Island, which took about an hour. Its an interesting place to explore, particularly if you are driving. The main prob is that you need to stay til night fall to catch the penguin parade. By then, its really dark and driving back can be quite scary cos there is no street lamp along there main highway until you're closer to the city.
The scenary along the great ocean road is really nice, but you might wanna consider staying overnight along the way if you wanna avoid driving at night. Cos by the time we reached the end of the sights, it was evening.
St. Kildas and various weekend markets at South Bank is also fun to explore.
Dun miss out victoria markets for fresh produce too
